History
Casa do Alentejo is the headquarters of a regional association for the promotion of Alentejo culture (a region in southern Portugal).
The building was a former club, the Majestic club (1919), one of many nightclubs that boomed during the roaring 20s. The club occupied a former palace - Palácio Alverca - of which only some of the outer walls, the family coat of arms over the main entrance and some 17th and 18th century tiles, have survived. The entrance is made through a flight of stairs that surprisingly leads to a large moorish courtyard. This is part of a complete transformation the palace suffered when the club was installed. The decoration we see today, that of the club, is a mixture of various revivalist architectural styles. These include neo-moorish in the inner courtyard and staircase, neo-doric in the upstairs hall, Luis XVI style in the ballroom, and neo-gothic in the reading room.
We will have a welcome drink in the moorish courtyard and then dinner will be served over two connected rooms: the former ballroom and the adjacent neo-renaissance former gambling room. The decoration is completed with frescoes and tiles by famous artists of the day.
